Gloc 9 - Hari ng Tondo ft.Denise (Manila Kingpin, The Asiong Salonga Story)

MANILA, Philippines - Laguna Governor George “ER” Ejercito is crying foul, saying his film, “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” was “sabotaged” – apparently the reason why it failed to open in some theaters in time for the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) grand opening on Christmas Day.

In a report posted on Journal Online, the politician-actor pointed his finger towards the film printing facility SQ Laboratories, saying, “Sinabotahe at inipit ng SQ Laboratories ang mga prints ng ‘Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story.’”

According to Ejercito, SQ Laboratories delivered only 17 prints of the film before the Metro Manila Film Festival Committee on Dec. 23 -- a far cry from the supposed 51 copies they agreed upon.

Not only were the prints lacking but it arrived late in the afternoon of Dec. 25 and was completed only Dec. 26.

"Kaya imbes na 51 theaters sa buong bansa ay sa 17 sinehan lang ito nakapagbukas sa tamang oras,” he said.

Without naming names, he went on to say, “Ito ay pinulitika at biniraso din ng mga malalaking film producers at inipit nila ang aming mga prints kaya po kami ay nahuli.”

The delay reportedly resulted in the loss of at least P20 million in potential earnings for the movie and, as such, producers are all set to file necessary legal actions against those responsible for the alleged blunder.

Nonetheless, Ejercito insisted that “Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story” is doing well, the delay notwithstanding. He maintained that the film continues to maintain strong at the box office despite reports to the contrary.

“Dinumog ng tao ang ‘Manila Kingpin, The Asiong Salonga Story’ sa 17 sinehan na nakapagpalabas nito sa tamang oras,” he said.

He is hoping for it to further its hold at the tills in the days to come, as well as grab major awards on Dec. 28.

“Ngayong kumpleto na kami sa 51 theaters nationwide, sana ay makabawi kami at makahakot ng awards,” Estregan said.

This is the second annoyance for the beleaguered biopic.

Only a few days ago, its director Tikoy Aguiluz requested to have his name removed from the credits of the movie complaining that it was re-shot and edited without his consent or knowledge. He went as far as to file a restraining order in local courts relating to the same.

The producers eventually relented to Aguiluz’s request.
